I swear even the dogs here speak differently

Monday was a very interesting day. After class, I went to the mall to try and by a phone. Somewhat of a traumatic experience, but I will say I learned something about myself, so it was well worth it.

To start, I walked into the first electronic store I could find. Every phone there was a minimum of $400Reais ($200USD). This was much more than my budget. Ideally, I wanted a basic smart phone so I could use whatsapp and a few other communication apps. Phones here tend to cost more than in the US. For example, an iPhone can go for $2500 Reais ($1250 USD). That kind of explains why my iPhone was stolen last year in Rio. Anyway, I had heard I could maybe get a basic smart phone for $250Reais, so I went onto the next store.

The next store was much bigger and had more basic phones so I thought I might be in luck. I looked around a bit and then busted out my English-Portuguese dictionary to get shopping. The girl I spoke with was nice enough, but I could tell she was a bit annoyed with my lack of language skills. I didn't understand anymore than 10% of what she said to me. Something about facebooki, no whatapp, wifi, 2 chips or 3. In hindsight, I should have asked a bit more about the phone system here before I went shopping. It is much different, as many phones are pre-paid and have chips with the credits imbedded in them. Many phones have several chips so you can take advantage of different offers. This also means you can have different cell phone numbers on the same phone. Anyway, after about 5 minutes of back and forth horrible dialogue and being confused until my head felt like it would explode, I was fed up to the point I was going to cave in and just get a $400R phone to get out of the conversation. This next part is embarrassing. I said in Portuguese that I wanted the phone, she walked me over the check out and when she went to get the chip or something and left me with her colleague, I said "Eu nao quero (I don't want) and ran out of the store. Ouch.

I am starting to realize when I get in uncomfortable situations, I tend to make them way worse in my own head and then I run. Whether it be from embarrassing language situations, relationships, or work situations. I am absolutely terrible at expressing my feelings in slightly uncomfortable situations. For those of you who know my recent work situation, there are several parallels. A good goal for me to have during my time hear is going to be improving my ability to express myself.

Anyway, finally, I found another store, managed to get by with a combination of Portuguese/Spanglish and purchased a $90R phone. This involved me having to leave the store once to go to the ATM to pull cash as my card did not work. After I had my new phone, I then went to the grocery store, bought some more fruit (and nuts this time too - another blog perhaps!) and started to walk home. I had walked for about 15 minutes and got about 80% home when I realized I left the box and charger for the phone at the electronic store. I walked back, while carrying all my groceries, got the charger and left the store (for the third time). I walked 3 minutes out of the store and saw my phone had a weird message saying something like "mechanica". I figured that meant it was broken, so I went back into the same store for the fourth time to have them fix it. All I had done was locked the phone. Oi!! It was a very mentally exhausting day.

Yesterday, I went to class and then to Praia Joaquina. Praia Joaquina is a great surfing beach. There I hung out with my Aussie classmate and some new friends we made while sipping on a few cervejas. I also managed to conquer the bus! I made it home in 30 minutes!!!

Today, I again went to class and then was off to the beach. This time, I went back to Praia Mole, my favorite beach so far. I ran into the same friends I had met yesterday and we went and hiked over to the more secluded beach next door, Praia Galheta. Getting there was a bit of a hike. We hiked over the beach, over some rocks and through an off beaten path/trail to get there. But when we arrived, it was absolutely worth it. The sand was very flat and smooth and the landscape with the lush jungle in the background was simply amazing. It was practically deserted except for a few other fellow beach bums.

I spent about an hour lounging in the sun, doing some basic exercises and yoga moves and then had my first surf lesson in Brazil!!! My new friend brought me out on his board and showed me some basics. It was very difficult to learn on this board as it was very very short and very very light. I still had a great time paddling around and attempting to ride some waves. Next time I will try and get a bigger board and hopefully actually ride one. Honestly though, being out in the water is the greatest thing ever. The sun on your back, the sea water spraying you every five seconds and the feel of the ocean rocking you back and forth is my version of paradise. After an hour of that, I was absolutely exhausted as I have no arm muscle endurance to save my life. I would like to mention here as well my friend complimented my strong swim skills. SAY WHAT? I thought I could barely swim. Being able to swim well is very necessary here. Just yesterday we saw lifeguards, a sea doo and a helicopter called to save someone.

We all relaxed on the beach for an hour and took the hike back. I then had an even more successful bus ride as a bus employee saw me reading the bus terminal time tables, informed me of a quicker bus and I understood what he was saying! I am getting much better at understanding the language; speaking is a whole other ball game.

Tomorrow, I again have class and then am going to a Brazilian Jiu Jit Su class. Should be fun!

Tchau!!

Vida da Brasileira! Life of a Brazilian Women

It has been a crazy past few days! I have had classe na manha e na tarde (have had class in the morning and in the afternoon) and it is very mentally exhausting. On sexta feira (friday) i went to the outdoor market with my host and her friend. Again, I bought more fruit! Look at those abacaxi (Pineapple) in the below foto! I also bought pipoca (popcorn! and one of the most fun words to say ever) and some delicious suco de abacaxi. Friday night I went to Bar de Boni for Samba. It was very fun. Much harder than I thought. I just kept smiling the whole time and an older Brazilian gentleman said I Samba with my smile. I will take it!! What is interesting is when you buy a cerveja (beer) you can get it in a 40, it comes in its own giant coozy-type thing, and you can get a mini glass or two. Much more economical! All of that cerveja for $3USD or 6Reais! Eu estou feliz (I am happy!!)

Saturday, I went to Praia Mole. Very beautiful beach meaning soft sand. Now, I absolutely love Brazil, but Chicago has one major leg up on Brazil: our CTA system. It took my 3 hours to get to the beach. I had to take one bus to a terminal, a bus from that terminal to another terminal, and finally a bus there to the beach I wanted to go to. Granted, I took longer than most as the system is a bit hard to figure out, but still. For a point of reference, I went to the same beach today and it took around 2 hours. I still think 2 hours is a bit crazy when you live on an island very close to the water. Apparently, the bus runs much much more often during the week when there are workers. My host informed me this is a way to keep the less fortunate financially away from the beaches as wealthier Brazilians will be able to drive. This makes sense as similar things are going on in Rio with their van system. I will not get into all of that now.

A random fact for you: Brazilian children go to school for 4 hours a day! They can go in the am or pm. I found this fascinating.

Anyway, today I ran in the Ecological Parque near minha casa (my house) and saw an alligator. After that I went back to the beach to work on my tan. It was a very nice day at the beach. The sun was shining and I was able to enjoy the company of some other Brazilians to practice my Portugues with. Right now, I am eating a papaya, drinking some sparkling wine and finishing my homework. Later tonight, I will attempt to read Brazilian Cosmo with the aide of my dictionary.

Tomorrow the plan is to go to class, get a phone and attempt to a salon to get a basic service. We shall see how those tasks go since I will be trying to speak Portuguese!

Tchau!

Eu gusto fruta Brazilian!

I love the Brazilian fruit! No, no really I do. I have been here for for vinte e oito (28 hours) and have had 3 mini bananas, grapes, a tangerine, guava, something that looks like an orange tomato and a yellow something that you open and eat the seeds. It is my new mission to try a new one every hoja (day) until I have eaten them all. This is much harder than it looks because um(one) Eu quero comer mesma fruta novamente (I want to eat the same fruit again) e dois (and 2) No tenho como (I don't know how). I have never seen these frutas and it is a total gamble on how comer (to eat) them. Today, I have gone by the bite and see method, (worked once - orange tomato looking thing), ask an English speaking person (worked once - guava), and the last, which is best if you have exhausted methods 1 and 2, the cut in half and eat with a spoon (yellow something w seeds). The last method, I feel is easy way out, although the yellow something tasted furry when I tried to bite it, so those less experimental with tastes may prefer this to other methods.

So to catch you up, yesterday I arrived in Florianopolis after a 10 hour flight from Chicago to São Paulo (SP) and then a one hour flight here. I got a cab straight to my host, a grad student and her cat Guile (very big cat!) and their cute apartment, which is about 2x my Chicago studio. I then went to the school to make sure I could find it, introduce myself and then went to grocery store where I fell in love (w frutas!)

Today it was rise and shine early, 7:30 for breakfast (comes w the host family experience) which was cafe, cereal, fruta (!) and other things I forget what they are called. Then I scurried off to make my 8:30 group class. I had anticipated my class to be a bit larger, but it was me and one Australian petroleum engineer living in Canada, who decided he needed a break from work as well. Most of the class was spent with us staring at the teacher while the teacher spoke to us primarily in Portuguese. I think I have a leg up on the Aussie, having studied Spanish, but when the teacher asked me a question, I answered in Italiano. I took Italian for a day when living in Italy, a decided I preferred sleep to an 8:30 am class, a 40 minute walk away. No idea where the Italian came from, but I am not sure if my language blur will be an asset or liability.

After 3 hours of feeling very confused, I was informed I had a 2 hour makeup class that afternoon (I started 2 days late - flights are cheaper on a monday vs. sunday!). My first start was what - no praia (beach)?!?! My second thought was the second class was much more challenging as the teacher spoke no English, but surprisingly we could still communicate. And it was just me, so we got to stare only at each other with confused expressions.

After that was more boring errands. Random fact: plastic baggies (freezer bags) cost 11.9R (around $6usd). I found that insane. To compare: 3 mini bananas cost 1.3R.

Successes of the day: asked a clerk where I could get a hair dryer (40R) and she understood me (and didn't laugh when I busted out my dictionary), ordered a cafe, and that is it.

Time for a cerveja. Maybe that will be success number 3?

Ready for Take Off!

Right now it is 6:30 and I am waiting in the United Lounge being fancy eating cheese and drinking Chardonnay as I wait for boarding time at 8:40. Normally, I am not very fancy. The most fancy I have been at an airport is when I accidentally checked a box to board in a early boarding group for RyanAir over in Europe. I owe this fanciness to my Chase United Credit Card.

I can't quite believe it is happening already. This time tomorrow I will be in Florianopolis, Brazil, hopefully a bit tanner and enjoying a Caiparenha. To be completely honest, I am more than a little bit nervous, but I am not quite sure if it is the type of nerves you get before a competition or the type of nerves you get when you know you are about to do something you shouldn't. Time will tell.

This morning was definitely a bit crazed as once I added my last minute items, I realized my suitcase weighed 60#, and me, being one of the cheapest travelers ever, this would not fly. Now, I am from the school of if you can't carry it, you don't need it, but moving somewhere is a bit different. If I am going for around 2 months, I need my hair products! It ended with me packing one less pair of shoes, switching to a lighter (and hot pink - see photo below!!) suitcase and accepting the fact that Brazilian women have hair products as well.

Ok, time for one last glass of wine so I can sleep all night! Tchau!!!

Last Night in Chicago!!

This is it!!!! Last night in Chicago!!! Going to spend it in true Chicago style by going to Second City with close friend KK. This weekend was spent running last minute errands (tip, if you are pale like me, save yourself some $ and buy sunscreen before you go!) and hanging out with the parents who are slightly warming up to the idea of me heading off to Brazil. I think maybe cracking the last bottle of wine from my 2009 European adventure helped ease the blow of "I quit my safe job and am heading off to a developing country to attempt to learn a new language and see what happens," to the point we ended with, "Just be safe and good luck!"

Tchau! Off to Second City and who knows where else!!

Last Day of Work!!!

Just had my last day of work. It was absolutely bitter sweet. I will miss the friends I made and the experiences I had, but I am so ready to explore a new life down in Brazil!!

My suitcase is packed minus toiletries and I will say I did pretty good. My philosophy is if you can't carry it, you don't need it! Also, a good rule of thumb is you need half the stuff, 2x the money. I may still downsize. For a minimum of 7 weeks, here is what I packed.
4 leggings
1 pair jeans
5 pair of shorts
1 pair of yoga pants
One sweater
One hoodie
1 long sleeve top
1 3/4 sleeve top
3 cardigans
One party dress
2 beach dresses
One blouse
One skirt suit
One Chicago Bulls Joakim Noah Jersey
7 tanks
4 tshirts
3 gym shorts
3 gym tanks
One rain coat
One set rash guard
4 bikinis
One flip flops
One dress heels (networking)
One running shoe
One pair chucks
One flat sandals
One wedge sandals
2 scarves

This definitely seems like a lot, but we will see!!!

Later!

I can't believe I did it

Tomorrow is my last day! I can't believe I did it, but I am so excited! There will never be the perfect time to do something like this and, unfortunately, I am not getting any younger.

A few changes to the trip. I still leave Monday, but now instead of a hostel, I will be living with a grad student one block from the school I will be attending. I will be in class for approximately 3.5 hours a day, volunteering, surfing(!) and trying to look for some sort of work.

I leave in 4 days so now I just need to get my fix of Chicago things (brunch, Hangee Uppe, cocktails with my closest friends and a few other random things. Gotta go buy sunscreen!! Tchau!!

And So It Begins....

Written and transferred from old blog (Written 4/1/2013, posted 4/11/2013)
Ola!! So today I did it!! I actually went and gave my two weeks notice and it felt great! Finally I feel free!!
I am packing my bags and in exactly two weeks I will be headed back to Florianapolis, Brazil to study Portuguese and hopefully find some sort of employment.
To be completely honest, I am a little terrified of this adventure (I’m excited too!) but don’t want to come back with no prospective jobs and no basic Portuguese skills whatsoever. I’m allowing myself to spend $4,000 of my savings before I come back to Chicago. Thankfully, my flights are very cheap (less than $200 from Chicago to Florianapolis thanks to sky miles - shout out Chase United Card!) and I plan on staying in hostels at $20/day.
So this is the beginning of my story. This blog is meant to journey my task of learning Portuguese, survive in a city that barely speaks English, find a job, and practice my surf skills all while not blowing my entire life savings. Plus, if you know me at all, a few shenanigans may occur :-) boa noite!!!
